cup-togoHow Relevo Works

Relevo operates as a digital platform designed to support circular economies by tracking reusable items across multiple parties. By adhering to simple operational rules, the system ensures efficiency and scalability. Tailored solutions are provided to customers, requiring minimal on-site adjustments to integrate seamlessly into their workflows. Below is an overview of Relevo's key technologies and processes.

Tracking architecture

Relevo's tracking system functions similarly to a library system, associating individual reusable items with users to promote circularity. Each element within the platform—locations, users, customers, and items—is assigned a unique identifier. When a reusable item is handed over to a user:

  • The platform records the date, time, location, and the customer involved.

  • The system tracks the item until it is returned for reuse.

  • All inventory movements and stock-keeping are also accounted for.

To maximize reuse efficiency, Relevo enforces a maximum borrowing duration (typically 14 days) and incentivizes timely returns by applying a potential fee if the item is not returned within the set period.

QR Code tracking

Relevo primarily uses QR codes for tracking due to their simplicity and reliability:

  • Reusable Items: Each item features a QR code sticker with meta information like its unique ID encoded.

  • Scanning Options: Guests and customers can use modern smartphones, tablets, or dedicated scanning devices such as mobile or wearable QR code scanners for fast and reliable recognition.

NFC & RFiD tracking

Recognizing the limitations of optical scanning, Relevo also supports wireless tracking technologies such as NFC and RFID:

  • NFC (Near Field Communication):

    • Ideal for short-range (less than 5 cm) individual scans.

    • Compatible with most smartphones and smartwatches.

    • Offers a slight upgrade over QR codes for user-focused applications.

  • RFID (Radio Frequency Identification):

    • Designed for long-range (up to 1 meter) mass recognition.

    • Suitable for warehouse and logistics environments where multiple tags need to be scanned simultaneously.

    • Enables automated tracking through gates, shelves, or washing facilities.

Both technologies can be added via stickers or through in-moulding during production. In-moulding enhances hygiene by eliminating exposed surfaces where bacteria could accumulate. However, customers should consider microwave safety when selecting tags, as only specific wireless tags can endure repeated microwaving cycles.
